The Family Service Intergenerational Center at Fair Oaks opened its doors in 2000 with the program philosophy that people of all ages and backgrounds are enriched by connecting with each other. The Center is located in a bustling community center where a library, community services such health, mental health and social services are co-located. A multipurpose center, the intergenerational center provides a support network and a stimulating place for lifelong learning for many people living in the Mid-Peninsula.
- A hot, tasty lunch is served to people aged 60 and above Tuesday through Friday. Each meal is nutritious, balanced, low salt and low sugar. The suggested donation for hot lunches is $2.50. Younger people can purchase the meal at full price.
- Healthy breakfasts five days a week.
- The Redi-Wheels program gives round-trip, door-to-door rides and much needed independence to people who have difficulty taking public transportation to the center.
- Our Wellness Program offers yoga, tai chi, soul line dance, diabetes education, health checks, feet and hand massages, quarterly nutrition discussions, ballet folklorico and a garden club.
- The Brown Bag Distribution program gives out 115 bags of groceries a week. Every Friday, volunteers unload trucks from Second Harvest Food Bank and assemble bags filled with food to give to other seniors.
- Trained peer counselors work with women in “platica” (“chat” in Spanish) sessions providing a safe environment for support and sharing issues.
- Bi-lingual case management is available to connect those in need with services.
