A Message from the Board Chair, Kirk C. Syme |
Dear Friends of Family Service:
Since joining Family Service Agency of San Mateo County’s Board of Directors in 2000, my involvement has been incredibly rewarding. Now, as board chair, I couldn’t be more thrilled to assume a leadership role in this bright chapter of Family Service’s history.
As a board member, one of my most gratifying experiences—and greatest challenges—was helping to complete Family Service’s $7.5 million capital campaign as a campaign co-chair. Thanks to the support of a caring community, we completed the capital campaign and settled the mortgage on our new headquarters; in doing so, we have not only increased Family Service’s operational efficiency, but also have provided an invaluable one-stop resource for people in need.
With the capital campaign now finalized, Family Service has set the stage for not only expanding the reach of its current array of vital programs and services, but also creating new and innovative resources for the children, families and older adults in our region. Whether we’re providing quality, affordable child care, offering a safe haven to families in crisis, or furnishing older adults with the tools to lead healthy and independent lives—the capacity for this incredible organization to expand its reach is virtually endless. We’re presently developing a strategic plan to evaluate the evolving needs of our community, so we can determine how we can best serve people from all walks of life and optimize our overall program growth.
As the proud father of five wonderful children, one topic of great significance to me is the importance of fatherhood. Family Service already is making tremendous strides with its work with Peninsula fathers, which includes the formation of a fatherhood support group that was applauded by NBC-11 TV’s Comunidad Del Valle show. As board chair, I intend to underscore these ongoing efforts to equip Peninsula fathers with every tool necessary to become the best parents possible.
Just as Family Service’s past success has been the result of collective efforts, so too will its future accomplishments be. We’re fortunate to have four tireless auxiliaries–Hillsborough, Foothill, Red-Car-Bel, and Valley—supporting us by hosting exceptional fundraisers, volunteering for events, and so much more. And our dedicated Board of Directors plays an equally pivotal role at Family Service by helping navigate our direction. Hailing from diverse backgrounds, our auxiliaries and board are united by a common thread: the desire to improve the lives of Peninsula families in need. Our community is a better place thanks to all of these extraordinary individuals.
If you’d like to join us in making a difference to Peninsula families in need, I welcome you to visit our new headquarters for a tour, join an auxiliary, attend our events, or make a donation by calling 650-403-4300. By working together with our community, Family Service will continue to flourish so that we can serve even more struggling people today, tomorrow and for many years to come.
Sincerely,
Kirk C. Syme
Board Chair
